Frozen Condensate Pipe? How to Get Your Boiler Working Again

If your boiler suddenly stops working during a cold snap, the cause may be a frozen condensate pipe. It is one of the most common winter boiler problems in Derby homes, and in many cases you can safely clear it yourself without waiting for an engineer.

This guide explains what the condensate pipe does, how to tell whether it has frozen, how to thaw it safely and how to reduce the chance of it happening again.

Quick answer

If your boiler stops in freezing weather and shows an error code, check the plastic condensate pipe where it runs outside. If it is frozen, apply warm (not boiling) water, a hot water bottle or a microwavable heat pack to the pipe, working along it until the ice clears. Then reset the boiler using the manufacturer's instructions. If the boiler still will not restart, contact a Gas Safe registered engineer.

What is a condensate pipe?

Modern condensing boilers produce a small amount of acidic waste water, known as condensate, as they work. This drains away through a plastic pipe, usually white or grey, that runs from the boiler to a drain, soil stack or soakaway.

When part of that pipe runs outside, the water inside it can freeze in very cold weather. The ice blocks the pipe, condensate backs up into the boiler and the boiler shuts down as a safety measure.

Signs your condensate pipe has frozen

  • The boiler has stopped working during freezing weather
  • The boiler display shows an error or lockout code
  • You can hear gurgling coming from the boiler or the pipe
  • The boiler restarts briefly after a reset, then locks out again

Error codes vary between manufacturers, so check your boiler manual or the manufacturer's website to confirm what your code means.

How to thaw a frozen condensate pipe safely

  1. Find the pipe. Follow the plastic pipe from the boiler to where it exits the wall and runs to the drain.
  2. Look for the blockage. Ice usually forms in the most exposed section outside, often near the open end or at a bend or dip in the pipe.
  3. Apply gentle heat. Hold a hot water bottle or microwavable heat pack against the pipe, or pour warm water over it. If you use a kettle, let the water cool for 10 to 15 minutes first.
  4. Work along the pipe until the ice clears and water can drain freely.
  5. Reset the boiler following the manufacturer's instructions for your model.

What not to do

  • Do not use boiling water. It can damage the plastic pipe and its joints.
  • Do not climb ladders in icy conditions. If the frozen section is high up or hard to reach, contact an engineer instead.
  • Take care on the ground. Water you pour can freeze quickly and make paths slippery.
  • Do not open the boiler casing. Any work inside a gas boiler must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

What if the boiler still will not work?

If the pipe is clear but the boiler will not restart, or the same fault keeps returning, there may be another issue. Repeated lockouts, pressure problems or unusual noises are worth having checked. Our boiler repair service in Derby can diagnose the fault, and our guide to boiler noises explains which sounds need attention.

How to stop your condensate pipe freezing

Some pipe runs are more vulnerable than others, particularly long external runs, pipes on north-facing walls and narrow pipework. Measures that can help include:

  • Insulating external sections with waterproof, weather-resistant lagging
  • Using a wider pipe outside. Some manufacturers recommend 32mm or larger for external runs
  • Reducing the length of pipe outside, or rerouting it internally where possible
  • Keeping the pipe at a steady fall with as few bends and dips as possible, so water drains away

Changes to the size, route or fall of the pipe should be assessed by a heating engineer. If your pipe has frozen before, ask about it at your next annual boiler service so the engineer can check whether the current pipework is suitable.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my condensate pipe has frozen?

The most common signs are a boiler that stops working during freezing weather, an error or fault code on the boiler display and a gurgling sound coming from the boiler or the pipe. If you can see the pipe outside, it may also have visible ice at the end or along its length.

Will a frozen condensate pipe damage my boiler?

A condensing boiler is designed to lock out when the condensate cannot drain away, which stops it running. Once the pipe is thawed and the boiler is reset, it will usually work normally again. If it keeps happening, ask an engineer to look at the pipe run so it can be improved.

Can I thaw the pipe myself?

Yes, if the frozen section is at ground level and easy to reach. Use warm water, a hot water bottle or a heat pack, never boiling water, and never open the boiler casing. If the pipe is high up or you are not comfortable doing it, call an engineer.
